Stetsonia coryne

Description

Stetsonia coryne, commonly known as the “Toothpick Cactus”, is native to the arid and semi-arid regions of northern Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay in South America. This cactus typically grows in flat, rocky, or sandy soils and can tolerate saline conditions. It is easily recognized by its thick, upright stems, tree-like form, and branching habit, which gives it a majestic appearance.

Here are some care tips:

Light

Stetsonia coryne prefers full sun exposure. Make sure it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for optimal growth.

Watering

Like most cacti, Stetsonia coryne requires little water. Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), about once a month, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. In winter, reduce or stop watering altogether to encourage blooming, and water only sparingly again in spring.

Soil

Use a well-draining soil mix, ideally one formulated for cacti. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

Temperature

This cactus tolerates high temperatures up to 35°C (95°F). In winter, it can withstand temperatures down to -4°C (25°F) as long as the soil remains dry.

Humidity

This cactus prefers a dry environment. Avoid excessive humidity, which can lead to fungal diseases.

Fertilization

Fertilize lightly once a month during the growing season with a cactus-specific fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing in autumn and winter.

Pruning and Repotting

Repot your Stetsonia coryne every two to three years in spring. Prune only to remove dead or damaged parts.

Precautions

Avoid overwatering, as excess moisture can cause root rot, one of the main causes of death in cacti. Ensure the pot has drainage holes and that the soil dries well between waterings. Watch for fungal diseases, especially in humid conditions. Mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids may also attack this cactus — treat infestations with appropriate or natural insecticides. Be careful with its sap, which can irritate the skin. Keep the plant out of reach of children and pets.
