Description
Echinofossulocactus, also known as Stenocactus, is a genus of cacti native to the desert and semi-desert regions of Mexico. These plants are typically found in rocky plains and hills, where they thrive under intense heat and arid conditions. The genus is prized for its wavy ribs and attractive flowers.
Here are some care tips:
Light
Echinofossulocactus prefers full sun exposure. Make sure it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day for optimal growth. Insufficient light may cause weak, elongated growth and reduced flowering.
Watering
Like most cacti, it requires very little water. Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In autumn and winter, reduce watering significantly or stop altogether.
Soil
Use a well-draining cactus potting mix. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot. You can add sand or perlite to improve drainage.
Temperature
This cactus thrives in warm conditions, ideally between 20°C and 30°C (68°F–86°F) during the growing season. In winter, it can tolerate cooler temperatures but should be kept above 5°C (41°F).
Humidity
This cactus prefers a dry environment. Avoid excess humidity, which can cause fungal diseases. Make sure there is good air circulation around the plant.
Fertilization
Fertilize lightly once a month during the growing season with a cactus-specific fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing in autumn and winter.
Pruning and Repotting
Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring, using a slightly larger pot with good drainage. Pruning is usually unnecessary — only remove dead or damaged parts if needed.
Precautions
Avoid overwatering, as excess moisture is the main cause of root rot, one of the leading killers of cacti. Always use pots with drainage holes and let the soil dry completely between waterings. Watch for fungal infections, especially in humid conditions, and inspect regularly for mealybugs or aphids. In case of infestation, treat with appropriate insecticides or natural remedies.
