Cleistocactus cristata

Description

Cleistocactus cristata is a succulent plant belonging to the Cactaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of South America. This species is characterized by its green, usually branched stems that form a crested or “cockscomb” shape, covered with small white or yellow spines.

Here are some care tips:

Light

This plant prefers bright to full sun exposure. Place it in a location where it can receive several hours of direct sunlight each day. It can also tolerate light shade for part of the day.

Watering

Like many cacti, Cleistocactus cristata is highly drought-tolerant and requires little water. Water only when the soil is completely dry — about every two to three weeks in summer. During winter, reduce watering to once a month or even less depending on temperature and humidity levels.

Soil

Use a well-draining soil mix specifically designed for cacti and succulents. Ensure the pot has proper drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Temperature

This plant prefers warm temperatures and withstands summer heat well. It can survive slightly below freezing for short periods, but it is best to protect it from frost.

Fertilization

Feed with a diluted cactus fertilizer once a month during spring and summer. Avoid over-fertilizing, as cacti naturally grow in nutrient-poor soils.

Repotting

Repot every two to three years in spring, using a slightly larger pot if needed. Be careful not to bury the stems too deeply, as this can cause rot.

Precautions

Handle with care due to its spines. Wear gloves when handling and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
