Echinocereus pentalophus

Description

Echinocereus pentalophus is a cactus from the Cactaceae family, native to Mexico. It is characterized by its dark green cylindrical stems, often solitary or forming small clusters, with distinct ribs and areoles bearing spines.

Here are some care tips:

Light

This plant prefers a bright to sunny location. Place it where it can receive several hours of direct sunlight each day. It can tolerate light shade during part of the day, but bright light encourages optimal growth.

Watering

Like most cacti, Echinocereus pentalophus is highly drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry — approximately every 2 to 3 weeks in summer. In winter, reduce watering to once a month or less, depending on ambient conditions.

Soil

Use a well-draining cactus and succulent mix. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Temperature

Echinocereus pentalophus prefers warm to moderate temperatures and does not tolerate frost. Keep it in an environment where temperatures stay above 5–10°C (41–50°F).

Fertilization

Feed your plant once a month during spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing in fall and winter when the plant is dormant.

Repotting

Repot your Echinocereus pentalophus every 2 to 3 years in spring if needed, using a slightly larger pot to allow for growth.

Precautions

Handle with care due to its spines. Wear gloves when handling and keep the plant in a safe location, out of reach of children and pets.
