Description
Mammillaria candida, commonly known as the “White Mammillaria Cactus” or “Snowball Cactus,” belongs to the Cactaceae family. This species is native to the arid regions of Mexico, where it typically grows in dry, rocky environments and is well adapted to extreme heat and drought.
Here are some care tips:
Light
This cactus thrives in very bright environments and enjoys direct sunlight. Ensure it receives at least six hours of sun per day for optimal growth and abundant flowering.
Watering
Mammillaria candida prefers dry, well-drained soil. Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering significantly to prevent excess moisture, as the plant enters dormancy.
Soil
Use a potting mix designed for cacti and succulents, which ensures good drainage. A mix of potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite is ideal to prevent excess moisture around the roots.
Temperature
Mammillaria candida prefers warm temperatures between 20°C and 30°C (68–86°F). It can tolerate cooler conditions but should be protected from frost and temperatures below 5°C (41°F).
Fertilization
Feed Mammillaria candida once a month during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer or one specifically formulated for cacti and succulents. Reduce feeding during winter.
Repotting
Repot every two to three years, preferably in spring. Use a slightly larger pot and fresh soil mix to promote healthy root growth.
Common Problems
Overwatering or poorly drained soil can cause root rot. Ensure the pot has proper drainage holes and allow the soil to dry well between waterings. Mealybugs and aphids may occasionally infest the plant; treat them with an appropriate insecticide or a mild soapy water solution.
