Description
Opuntia subulata, also known as “Leaf Cactus” or “Subulate Opuntia,” is a succulent plant native to the desert regions of South America, mainly Peru and Ecuador. It is admired for its elongated, cylindrical green or bluish stems, covered with small, light-colored spines, and for its bright yellow flowers that bring an exotic and striking touch to any dry garden or indoor space.
Here are some care tips to keep your plant healthy:
Light
Opuntia subulata prefers bright, direct sunlight. Place it where it can receive at least 6 hours of direct sun per day, such as near a south- or west-facing window.
Watering
Like most cacti, it is highly drought-tolerant. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Generally, watering every 2 to 3 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) is sufficient. In fall and winter, reduce watering drastically or even stop altogether, as the plant enters its dormant period.
Humidity
This cactus prefers dry environments and does not require high humidity. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent mold or fungal issues.
Temperature
Opuntia subulata thrives in warm temperatures and can tolerate up to 40°C (104°F) in summer. It can survive cooler winter temperatures, but should be protected from prolonged frost.
Soil
Use a well-draining cactus and succulent mix, or prepare your own by adding coarse sand or perlite to regular potting soil to improve drainage. Always make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water accumulation around the roots.
Fertilization
Feed lightly with a balanced cactus fertilizer once a month during spring and summer. Avoid fertilizing in fall and winter, when the plant is resting.
Pruning
This plant generally does not require pruning, but you can gently remove any damaged or unhealthy stems using clean, disinfected tools to maintain a tidy appearance.
Common Problems
Watch for signs of root rot, often caused by overwatering. Mealybugs and aphids may also appear occasionally — treat them with an appropriate insecticide or natural remedy if needed.
