Description
Opuntia microdasys, commonly known as the Bunny Ear Cactus or Polka-Dot Prickly Pear, is a succulent plant native to Mexico. It is especially prized for its paddle-shaped segments covered with tiny yellow glochids that resemble soft hairs, and for its easy, fast growth under the right conditions.

Light
Opuntia microdasys loves bright, sunny locations. Place it where it can receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. A south- or southwest-facing window is ideal.
Watering
Like most cacti, this species is highly drought-tolerant. Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Generally, watering every 2 to 3 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) is sufficient. In autumn and winter, reduce watering significantly or stop altogether, as the plant enters dormancy.
Humidity
This cactus prefers dry environments and does not require high humidity. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent mold or fungal issues.
Temperature
Opuntia microdasys tolerates high temperatures and can withstand up to 40°C (104°F) in summer. However, it is sensitive to cold and should be protected from frost. Avoid exposing it to temperatures below 5°C (41°F) for long periods.
Soil
Use a well-draining cactus and succulent mix, or prepare your own by adding coarse sand or perlite to regular potting soil to improve drainage. Always make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water accumulation around the roots.
Fertilization
Feed lightly with a balanced cactus fertilizer once a month during spring and summer. Avoid fertilizing in fall and winter, when the plant is dormant.
Pruning
Opuntia microdasys rarely needs pruning, but you can gently remove damaged pads with clean, disinfected tools to maintain a healthy appearance.
Common Problems
Watch for signs of root rot, often caused by overwatering. Mealybugs and aphids may also appear occasionally — treat them with an appropriate insecticide or natural remedy if needed.
