Description
Opuntia pilifera is a cactus species belonging to the Opuntia genus, native to the arid regions of Mexico. It thrives in desert and semi-desert areas, where it has adapted to extreme heat and drought conditions. Members of the Opuntia genus are often referred to as “Prickly Pears” because of their edible fruits.

Light
Opuntia pilifera prefers full sun exposure. Make sure it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for optimal growth.
Watering
Like most cacti, Opuntia pilifera requires very little water. Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In fall and winter, reduce watering significantly.
Soil
Use a well-draining soil mix, ideally one formulated for cacti. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Temperature
Opuntia pilifera tolerates high temperatures and can withstand up to 40°C (104°F). In winter, it can tolerate slightly below freezing temperatures if the soil remains dry.
Humidity
This cactus prefers a dry environment. Avoid excessive humidity, which can lead to fungal diseases.
Fertilization
Fertilize lightly once a month during the growing season with a cactus-specific fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing in autumn and winter.

Repot your Opuntia pilifera every 2–3 years in spring. Prune only to remove dead or damaged pads.
Precautions
Do not overwater Opuntia pilifera — excess moisture can cause root rot, one of the main causes of death in these cacti. Make sure the pot has drainage holes and that the soil dries thoroughly between waterings. Also, watch for fungal issues in high humidity and check regularly for mealybugs or aphids. If infested, treat with an appropriate insecticide or natural remedies.
