Description
Echinopsis calochlora is a succulent plant belonging to the Cactaceae family. This species is native to the arid and semi-arid regions of South America, particularly Argentina and Bolivia. It is commonly found in rocky and sandy habitats, where it is well adapted to heat and drought conditions.
Light
This plant prefers bright, direct sunlight. It thrives in full sun exposure, but it’s best to gradually acclimate it to intense light to prevent stem burn.
Watering
Echinopsis calochlora prefers dry, well-draining soil. Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to prevent excess moisture, as the plant enters dormancy.
Soil
Use a well-draining cactus mix, ideally composed of potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite. This combination ensures good drainage and prevents excess moisture around the roots.
Temperature
Echinopsis calochlora prefers moderate to warm temperatures, ideally between 15°C and 30°C (59°F–86°F). It can tolerate slightly cooler conditions, but should be protected from frost and temperatures below 5°C (41°F).
Fertilization
Feed your Echinopsis calochlora once a month during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer or one specifically formulated for cacti and succulents. Reduce feeding during the winter months.
Repotting
Repot your Echinopsis calochlora every 2 to 3 years, preferably in spring. Use a slightly larger pot and fresh soil mix to encourage healthy root growth.
Common Problems
Overwatering or poorly drained soil can cause root rot. Ensure the pot has drainage holes and that the soil dries out between waterings. Mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites can occasionally appear — treat them with an appropriate insecticide or a mild soapy water solution.
