Description
Cleistocactus winterii, commonly known as the monkey tail cactus, is a cactus native to the mountainous regions of Bolivia. It is appreciated for its trailing or columnar stems and its bright pink to purple trumpet-shaped flowers. It is a popular indoor plant and an interesting addition to cactus gardens.
Here are some care tips:
Light:
Cleistocactus winterii prefers full sun exposure. Place it in a spot where it can receive at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. Indoors, a south-facing window is ideal. Insufficient light can result in weak, elongated growth and poor flowering.
Watering
Like most cacti, Cleistocactus winterii requires moderate watering. Water thoroughly during the growing season (spring and summer), then allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. In winter, significantly reduce watering to allow the plant to rest. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Temperature and Humidity
This cactus tolerates temperature variations well but prefers warm conditions during the growing season, ideally between 20 and 32°C. In winter, it can withstand cooler conditions down to around 5°C, as long as the soil remains dry. It thrives in dry environments, so normal indoor humidity is suitable.
Soil and Fertilization
Use a well-draining cactus and succulent soil mix. You can add sand or perlite to improve drainage further. Fertilize once a month during the growing season with a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Pruning and Propagation
Cleistocactus winterii generally does not require pruning, but you can remove damaged or diseased parts when necessary. It can be easily propagated from stem cuttings. Allow the cuttings to dry for a few days so the wounds can callus, then plant them in a well-draining substrate.
Common Problems
This plant is fairly resistant to pests and diseases, but it may occasionally be affected by mealybugs or spider mites. Inspect regularly and treat infestations with suitable insecticidal solutions or natural remedies like neem oil. Ensure good air circulation to help prevent fungal issues.
