Senecio herreianus

Description

Senecio herreianus, commonly known as “String of Beads”, is a succulent plant native to Namibia, belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is recognized for its slender, trailing stems adorned with small, spherical green leaves that resemble beads or pearls.

Here are some care tips:

Light

This plant prefers bright, indirect light. Protect it from direct sunlight, especially during the summer, to prevent leaf burn. Place it near a bright window where it can receive filtered or indirect light throughout the day.

Watering

Like most succulents, Senecio herreianus is sensitive to overwatering. Water moderately, about once every two weeks in summer, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to once a month or less, as the plant enters dormancy.

Soil

Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix, or amend standard potting soil with sand or perlite to improve drainage. Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Temperature

This plant prefers warm to mild temperatures and does not tolerate cold below 10°C (50°F). Protect it from cold drafts and temperature extremes.

Fertilization

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced succulent fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing during fall and winter, when growth slows.

Repotting

Repot every two to three years in spring if necessary, using a slightly larger pot to allow the roots to expand.

Precautions

Handle Senecio herreianus gently, as its delicate stems break easily. Keep the plant out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidental damage.
