Description
Graptopetalum pentandrum ‘Superbum’ is a beautiful succulent species from the Crassulaceae family. Native to Mexico, it naturally grows in arid and semi-arid environments, often in rocky or sandy soils. This plant is perfectly adapted to dry and hot conditions.
Here are some care tips to keep it thriving:
Light
This plant prefers bright, direct light. It can tolerate full sun, but it’s best to acclimate it gradually to intense light to prevent leaf burn. Bright indirect light is also suitable.
Watering
It prefers dry, well-drained soil. Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to prevent excess moisture, as the plant goes dormant.
Soil
Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. A combination of potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite works perfectly to ensure good drainage and avoid excess moisture around the roots.
Temperature
It thrives in moderate to warm temperatures, ideally between 15°C and 30°C (59°F–86°F). It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures but should be protected from frost and temperatures below 5°C (41°F).
Fertilization
Feed once a month during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer or one specifically formulated for cacti and succulents. Reduce or stop feeding in winter when growth slows.
Repotting
Repot every two to three years, preferably in spring. Choose a slightly larger pot with fresh, well-draining soil to encourage healthy root growth.
Common Problems
Overwatering or poorly drained soil can cause root rot. Ensure the pot has drainage holes and that the soil dries out between waterings. Mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites can occasionally appear — treat them with an appropriate insecticide or a mild soapy water solution.
