Description
Sedum pachyphyllum commonly known as “Jelly Bean Plant” is a succulent plant belonging to the Crassulaceae family. Native to Mexico, this species is well adapted to arid and semi-arid conditions, often found in rocky and dry environments.
Here are some care tips:
Light
This plant loves bright environments and thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate full sun, but gradual exposure is recommended to prevent sunburn.
Watering
Sedum pachyphyllum prefers dry, well-drained soil. Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to prevent root rot.
Soil
Use a cactus or succulent mix that ensures good drainage. A blend of potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite is ideal to prevent excess moisture around the roots.
Temperature
This plant prefers moderate to warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 24°C (65°F–75°F). It can tolerate cooler conditions but should be protected from frost and temperatures below 5°C (41°F).
Fertilization
Feed your Sedum pachyphyllum once a month during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer or one formulated for succulents. In winter, reduce or stop fertilizing.
Repotting
Repot your Sedum pachyphyllum every 2 to 3 years, preferably in spring. Choose a slightly larger pot and refresh the soil mix to promote healthy root growth.
Common Problems
Overwatering or poorly draining soil can lead to root rot. Ensure your pot has drainage holes and that the soil dries completely between waterings. Occasionally, mealybugs and aphids may appear; treat them with a suitable insecticidal solution or a mild soapy mixture.
