Rhipsalis houlletiana

Description

Rhipsalis houlletiana is an epiphytic cactus native to South America, belonging to the Cactaceae family. This species is characterized by its slender, flexible, cylindrical stems, usually green or slightly reddish, and by its small white or yellow flowers.

Here are some care tips:

Light

This plant prefers bright to semi-shaded conditions. Place it where it receives filtered or indirect light. It can tolerate some gentle morning or evening sun, but avoid direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day.

Watering

Like many epiphytic cacti, Rhipsalis houlletiana requires regular but moderate watering. Water when the top layer of soil feels dry — about once a week in summer. Reduce watering to every 10–14 days in winter when growth slows down.

Soil

Use a well-draining soil mix designed for cacti or epiphytic succulents. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

Temperature

This plant prefers moderate temperatures and does not tolerate frost. Keep it in an environment where temperatures remain above 10°C (50°F).

Fertilization

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertilizer formulated for cacti and succulents. Avoid fertilizing during autumn and winter when the plant enters dormancy.

Repotting

Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring if necessary, using a slightly larger pot and fresh soil mix. Make sure the pot has adequate drainage holes.

Precautions

Handle your plant carefully — its thin, flexible spines can cause mild skin irritation. Although non-toxic, it’s best to avoid prolonged contact.
