It is especially admired for its cylindrical stems covered in silky white hairs, giving it a soft, fuzzy appearance, as well as for its bright, striking flowers that bring a touch of exotic charm and beauty to any indoor space or dry garden.

Here are some care tips to keep your Opuntia vestita healthy and thriving:

Light
Opuntia vestita prefers bright, direct light. It needs several hours of direct sunlight each day to grow well. Place it near a south- or west-facing window where it can receive the maximum amount of sunlight.

Watering
Like all succulents, this plant requires moderate watering. Water only when the soil is completely dry, approximately every 2 to 3 weeks. Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water accumulation, which can lead to root rot. In winter, reduce watering significantly, as the plant enters its dormant period.

Humidity
Opuntia vestita adapts well to average indoor humidity. It does not require high humidity and may even suffer in overly damp environments. Ensure good air circulation to prevent mold or fungal issues.

Temperature
This succulent thrives in temperatures between 15°C and 30°C (59°F–86°F). It can tolerate higher heat, but should be protected from frost and temperatures below 5°C (41°F), which can damage its pads.

Soil
A well-draining soil mix is essential. Use a cactus or succulent potting mix, or make your own by combining regular potting soil with coarse sand or perlite to improve drainage.

Fertilization
Feed your Opuntia vestita once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) using a balanced succulent fertilizer, diluted to half strength. Stop fertilizing in fall and winter, when the plant goes dormant.

Pruning
Opuntia vestita generally does not require pruning. However, you can remove damaged or diseased stems to keep the plant clean and improve air circulation. Healthy segments can also be used for propagation by cuttings.

Common Problems
Watch for signs such as soft or discolored stems, which may indicate overwatering, or pale stems, a sign of insufficient light. Mealybugs and aphids are the most common pests, but they can be managed with appropriate treatments.

L’Opuntia vestita, également connue sous le nom de « Opuntia laineuse » ou « cactus chenille, » est une plante succulente originaire des régions montagneuses d’Amérique du Sud, notamment de Bolivie et d’Argentine.
