Crassula ovata

Description

Crassula ovata, commonly known as the “Jade Plant” or “Money Tree”, Crassula ovata is a succulent native to the subtropical regions of South Africa and Mozambique. This species is admired for its thick, glossy leaves and its easy indoor growth. The name “Jade Plant” comes from the color and texture of its leaves, reminiscent of the precious jade stone.

It’s a low-maintenance plant, perfect for both beginner and experienced succulent lovers. Here are a few care tips:

Light

The Jade Plant prefers bright to direct sunlight. Place it near a well-lit window where it can receive at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day. It can also adapt to bright indirect light.

Watering

This plant requires little water. Water moderately during summer, about once every two weeks, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to once a month.

Soil

Use a well-draining soil mix, ideally formulated for succulents. Adding sand or perlite can further improve drainage.

Temperature

The Jade Plant prefers warm conditions and is sensitive to frost. Keep it in an environment where temperatures remain above 10°C (50°F).

Fertilization

Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted succulent fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing in fall and winter, when the plant is dormant.

Repotting

Repot every two to three years in spring, when the plant outgrows its pot or needs refreshed soil.

Precautions
Although Crassula ovata is non-toxic, it is sensitive to overwatering. Ensure proper drainage and avoid excess moisture to prevent root rot. Keep out of reach of children and pets to avoid accidental ingestion of the leaves.
